Legendary College Football Coach Lou Holtz Passes Away at 89

Notre Dame confirmed on Wednesday the passing of Lou Holtz, the iconic coach who guided the Fighting Irish to their final national championship in 1988. The 89-year-old coach had been in declining health, with his family revealing he had transitioned to hospice care in Orlando, Florida.

Over the course of his 33-year collegiate coaching career, Holtz amassed a 249-132-7 record, with a significant portion of his success achieved in South Bend. From 1986 to 1996, the team posted a 100-30-2 mark under his direction.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Lou Holtz,” stated current Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman. “Lou’s impact at Notre Dame has gone well beyond the football field. He and his wife, Beth, are respected across campus for their generous hearts and commitment to carry out Notre Dame’s mission.”

Holtz’s legacy at the university remains deeply ingrained, with his contributions extending far beyond athletic achievements. His influence on the program was profound, shaping its cultural and institutional identity in lasting ways.
