Olly Alexander: ‘Cis people do care about trans rights’

On March 11, a coalition of pop icons and influential queer advocates will unite for Trans Mission, a Live Aid-style gathering designed to bolster the trans community beyond financial support. The event aims to generate optimism and solidarity, emphasizing collective action in the face of rising challenges.

Artists and Activists Join Forces

Pop sensation and LGBTQ+ advocate Olly Alexander is spearheading the initiative alongside Glyn Fussell, the visionary behind the globally renowned queer festival Mighty Hoopla. Their collaboration seeks to amplify voices and foster unity.

The Supreme Court’s recent decision to define gender by biological sex has sparked concern among activists. Alexander penned an open letter urging artists to denounce the ruling and stand with trans individuals facing heightened risks.

This letter, endorsed by Dua Lipa, Charli XCX, and other prominent figures, has grown into a large-scale concert at London’s Wembley Arena. Performers include Sugababes, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Adam Lambert, and special appearances from Sir Ian McKellen, Russell Tovey, Zack Polanski, and others.

‘The media is filled with prominent anti-trans voices, and our government has weakened its support for LGBTQ+ rights as part of a wider campaign against vulnerable groups,’ Alexander states.

‘Trans Mission is meant to be a powerful display of unity, proving that cisgender individuals also champion trans rights. It’s about building a shared front, not leaving the responsibility solely to trans people,’ he adds.

A diverse lineup highlights the intersection of identities, featuring both trans talent and cisgender artists from varied backgrounds. Alexander expresses pride in this representation, underscoring its significance.

Creating Safe Spaces for Joy and Unity

Drag Race UK’s Tia Kofi, one of the event’s speakers, emphasizes the importance of collective support. ‘Trans people shouldn’t bear the burden alone. Allies must step up to elevate their voices and show presence,’ she says.

‘The current climate is tough for trans individuals, with false narratives often used to divert attention. Marginalized groups have historically been tools for political agendas, but we’re not pawns—we’re people of love, life, and creativity who deserve respect,’ Rasmussen explains.

Tom Rasmussen, a trailblazing trans musician celebrated for their unique queer dance-pop style, connects trans rights to broader struggles. ‘The fight for my rights ties directly to the plight of refugees and Palestinians, reminding us that all marginalized communities are interconnected in their battles for dignity.’

Alexander hopes the event will leave audiences feeling inspired and hopeful. ‘Change begins with each of us, and every action—no matter how small—can spark meaningful change,’ he reflects.
