British teen Sky Brown is skateboarding world champion again

Sky Brown, a 17-year-old British skater, has once again secured the global skateboarding title, following her earlier victory at 14. Her triumph in Brazil was celebrated alongside her father, former skateboarder Stewart Brown, who shared in the moment.

“This feels huge and I’m so thankful,” said Brown, reflecting on the win. She also noted the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, adding, “There are bigger things and I just pray for peace for the world.”

The competition in Sao Paolo faced initial delays due to “adverse weather conditions and recurrent rainfall.” After the finalists completed two of the four planned runs, organizers opted to finalize the results, citing the unsafe conditions caused by heavy rain at the venue.

Brown was declared the winner with a score of 88.16, narrowly ahead of Japan’s Mizuho Hasegawa (84.36) and American Minna Stess (83.90). Following her victory, Brown expressed mixed emotions, stating, “The level is crazy. I had to put a lot down to get here, but I am definitely bummed that we couldn’t fully do a final.”

Winning on International Women’s Day held particular significance for Brown, whom officials ranked 7th in the world. Hasegawa, the 15-year-old Japanese competitor, shared a heartfelt embrace with Brown after the event, now holding the top position in the global rankings.

At just 14, Brown previously claimed the world title in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, with a standout performance of 90.83. She also made history as Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist at 13, earning bronze in Tokyo 2020. A week after dislocating her shoulder, she added another bronze in the park competition at the 2024 Paris Games.

Born in Miyazaki, Japan, to her Japanese mother, Mieko, and British father, Stewart Brown, the athlete began competing internationally at age eight, including the US Open in 2016. She first represented Great Britain in 2018, marking the start of her rise to prominence.

Skateboarding was introduced as one of four new sports to the Olympics in 2020, featuring events in both “park” and “street” formats. This milestone has cemented its place in global competition, showcasing the sport’s growing appeal.
