Bag containing weed and cash accidentally donated to New Zealand charity shop

Two teenagers in New Zealand inadvertently donated a knapsack filled with marijuana and currency to a charity shop. They later rushed back to recover the bag, as reported by the police on Monday.

New Zealand Police stated that a volunteer detected a strong smell upon opening the bag and found 43.2 grams of marijuana, equivalent to 1.5 ounces, along with 3,700 New Zealand dollars ($2,200) in paper money.

The episode transpired on February 18 in the Southland region of the South Island. A police spokesperson declined to reveal the shop’s exact location to safeguard the staff. The teens had placed the knapsack at the donation area while waiting for their vehicle to be repaired at a local workshop.

Officers were summoned after the panicked teenagers returned to the store. During the investigation, they uncovered an air pistol, a police scanner, and further cash in the vehicle.

Recreational use and sales of marijuana are prohibited in New Zealand, although certain medical applications are permitted with a doctor’s prescription. Police noted that while carrying a scanner is lawful, sharing or using information from it is a criminal offense. Details about charges or court appearances remain undisclosed.

New Zealand enforces rigorous guidelines on what information can be shared about cases in the Youth Court, which primarily deals with minors under the age of 17.
