More UK Troops to Be Sent to Middle East, Defence Secretary Announces

Expanded Deployment for Regional Defence

Defence Secretary John Healey revealed that additional British military personnel and advanced air defence systems will be sent to the Middle East to bolster defensive capabilities against Iranian threats. This brings the total number of UK forces stationed in the Gulf region and Cyprus to approximately 1,000. The new assets include air defence teams and systems planned for Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait, while Typhoon jets currently operating in Qatar will see their mission extended.

During his visit to Gulf nations, Healey emphasized the UK’s commitment to supporting allies. “Britain’s best will help you defend your skies,” he stated, highlighting the strategic importance of the deployment. The UK has opted for a defensive posture in the conflict, contrasting with US President Donald Trump’s criticism of this approach.

Trump’s Criticism and UK’s Stance

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reiterated on Monday that the UK would not allow itself to be drawn into the war but would protect its interests and allies. Healey’s tour included stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Bahrain, where the government unveiled further military arrangements. Officials noted that Gulf nations have praised the UK’s contributions, calling them “a cornerstone” of regional security.

“Countries that did not participate in the initial strikes on Iran should ‘get your own oil’ from the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT.”

Trump’s remarks followed a recent attack on a Kuwaiti power and desalination plant, which he framed as a warning to the entire region. Healey acknowledged the threat, noting that Iran has been intensifying its operations and that the conflict may persist for several weeks.

Military Integration and Strategic Measures

The UK has deployed the Lightweight Multirole Missile launcher to Bahrain, where experts are working to integrate it into local defences. Meanwhile, the Rapid Sentry ground-based system has already arrived in Kuwait. Healey also confirmed the extension of Typhoon jet operations in Qatar, with military planners now stationed at US headquarters and a British Navy ship set to assist in clearing mines from the Strait of Hormuz if needed.

Starmer had previously allowed the US to use UK bases for defensive strikes on Iranian missile sites but denied requests for involvement in the initial February attacks. Healey addressed Trump’s frustration, stressing the strong alliance between the UK and US, and reaffirming the UK’s focus on maintaining the key shipping lane through coordinated efforts.
