England Squad Update: Guehi Fitness Concern and Rice’s Illness Ahead of Norway Clash
Guehi a doubt for Norway game – England’s preparations for their World Cup quarter-final encounter with Norway have been complicated by injury concerns affecting key players. Marc Guehi, who has featured in every one of England’s five tournament matches so far, faces a fitness test on Friday that could determine his availability for Saturday’s crucial quarter-final against Norway. The Manchester City centre-back sustained a hamstring problem during England’s 3-2 triumph over Mexico in the last-16 round at the Azteca Stadium. While initial assessments suggested the issue was merely muscular fatigue that would resolve quickly, further evaluation revealed a more significant hamstring strain. Guehi remains hopeful about his chances of recovery and is eager to demonstrate his fitness to the coaching staff. Should Guehi miss Friday’s training session with the squad, his participation against Norway would come into serious question. Although the injury is not considered severe, England manager Thomas Tuchel cannot afford to take unnecessary risks with his defensive options, particularly given the threat posed by Norway’s seven-goal scorer Erling Haaland.
Defensive Options Under Scrutiny
The situation at right-back has become increasingly complicated for England. Reece James, the first-choice option in that position, returned to full training on Thursday for the first time since picking up a hamstring injury during the goalless draw against Ghana. While James did not complete the entire Thursday session, he is expected to be available for selection against Norway provided he experiences no adverse symptoms. James’ potential return represents significant relief for Tuchel, as right-back has emerged as England’s most problematic position due to a combination of injuries and suspensions. Jarell Quansah, who started at right-back against Mexico, has now been handed a two-match ban following his red card in the last-16 victory. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s Tino Livramento suffered a calf injury before the tournament even began, prompting Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah to be called up as his replacement. When accounting for all the issues, Djed Spence was potentially the only natural right-back available for the Norway fixture. This makes James’ recovery particularly timely for the squad.
Rice’s Double Trouble
Declan Rice has been absent from training for a second consecutive day due to a sickness bug that has affected several members of the squad. England have implemented measures to prevent the illness from spreading further among the players. Rice’s situation is compounded by a pre-existing neural issue that has been affecting both his hamstring and lower back. The recent illness has worsened this underlying condition, raising concerns about his availability. The midfielder had been managing the neural problem before contracting the bug, and the combination has left his status uncertain.
Konsa’s Versatility Display
Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, who can operate at both centre-back and right-back, provided insight into the tactical flexibility required during the tournament. The Villa defender spoke about his experience covering the right wing-back position during England’s victory over Mexico.
“With the heat and everything and having to change positions, going to right wing-back with a man down, it’s not easy,” Konsa explained. “You have to tuck in and then, when the ball gets switched, you’ve got to run out and try to stop crosses.”
Konsa admitted that the mental challenge of adapting his role was significant in the opening stages of the match.
“And I think the first 10 minutes mentally was tough because I was feeling it a little bit, but I had to find a switch and overcome it.”
The midfielder praised John Stones for his support during the positional change, noting that Stones even offered to swap places with him.
“He even asked to swap positions,” Konsa added. “But I told him: ‘No, don’t worry, it’s fine.’ So yeah, I had to find a switch. And thankfully I managed to find it just in time.”
Konsa expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and his willingness to play wherever the manager requires.
“Super proud of the boys and what we managed to achieve that night. I’ll always play wherever the manager wants me to play. As long as I’m on that pitch and helping the team, I’m happy no matter where I’m playing.”
Centre-Back Depth
Should Guehi ultimately miss out on the Norway game, England have sufficient cover at centre-back. John Stones, Dan Burn, and Trevoh Chalobah are all available to step in if needed. This depth provides Tuchel with options to maintain defensive stability regardless of Guehi’s fitness status. The manager will monitor all his players closely during Friday’s training session before making final decisions on the starting lineup for what promises to be a challenging quarter-final encounter.
