Balamory is back – Miss Hoolie and PC Plum lift the lid on what to expect
Balamory Reimagined: A Nostalgic Return with New Adventures
After more than two decades since its conclusion on CBeebies, the beloved children’s series is making a comeback with a brand-new season this month. Among those making a triumphant return are familiar faces like Miss Hoolie and PC Plum, with the iconic characters reuniting for fresh episodes. The show’s charm, rooted in friendship and fun, continues to captivate audiences, even as the island’s story evolves.
A New Chapter for the Island Community
“What’s the story in Balamory?” asks Julie Wilson Nimmo, who is better known as Miss Hoolie. She’s been fielding this question for over two decades. For millions, the phrase instantly triggers memories of the show’s vibrant fictional island, where everyday challenges were solved through collaboration and laughter. The revival comes a month after a BBC report warned of a decline in UK-made children’s content, with the sector facing major hurdles and reduced investment from broadcasters.
“It’s such an honour to be back doing something that we love so much,” says Andrew Agnew, who plays the well-meaning PC Plum. The cast hopes the show’s enduring warmth will resonate with a new generation, offering a rare glimpse of children on screen in a world dominated by animated fare.
Wilson Nimmo, reflecting on the revival, calls it a “love letter to the original,” emphasizing its significance for fans. The programme’s global reach, spanning Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, and South Africa, has earned the cast international acclaim. Wilson Nimmo recalls meeting Australian music group The Wiggles during visits, while Agnew shares a touching moment in Turkey where children recognized him in swimwear, shouting, “You’re PC Plum!”
Returning Cast and Fresh Faces
The cast’s emotional reunion during the initial script read-through was a highlight. “I was pretty emotional because we were seeing the scripts for the first time,” Wilson Nimmo admits. “They played some of the songs, and the nostalgia buzz was real.” The series retains much of the original cast, including Penny Pocket, the shopkeeper, and Edie McCredie, the delivery driver, alongside new characters like Dr. Ollie (Carl Spencer) and the Harbourmaster (William Andrews).
“The island would not be the same without him. He’s still bumbling, still a wee bit getting the wrong end of the stick quite a lot,” Agnew jokes about PC Plum’s enduring role. He also hints at the addition of new characters, calling them “fantastic” and a “lovely new touch” to the show.
While Miles Jupp, who portrayed the original inventor Archie, is not returning, the series introduces Ava Potts (Danielle Jam), a new resident inventor following in his footsteps. The revival also features new songs, with classic tracks given a modern update. “There’s new songs as well and new takes on the songs because they’ve been revamped a wee bit to modernise them,” Agnew explains. The duo notes that the older songs remain a cherished part of the show’s legacy, with fans still humming them.
Produced by Lion Television Scotland, the revival includes two series with ten episodes each, premiering on CBeebies on Monday, April 20th, and available on BBC iPlayer the same day. With its blend of nostalgia and innovation, Balamory promises to delight both old and new fans alike.
