Ban for teacher who told pupils about drunken night

Ban for Teacher Who Shared Personal Details with Students

A 36-year-old educator from Yeovil, Somerset, faced an indefinite ban from teaching after sharing personal details with students. Natasha Blackmore, head of design technology at Westfield Academy secondary school, disclosed private aspects of her life, such as relationships and social outings, during professional interactions.

A Professional Conduct Panel of the Teaching Regulation Agency reviewed the case. Blackmore presented texts where she had used disparaging language about someone else, and recounted instances of smoking, drinking, and vaping during a hen night. She admitted to behaviors that constituted improper conduct and potentially tarnished the teaching profession.

Student Accounts Highlight Close Bonds

The report noted that up to five students frequently visited her during school breaks and lunch periods. One student claimed that four peers would regularly gather in her classroom during breaks and lunch. They described conversations covering daily experiences, behavior, home life, and even personal arguments, indicating a relaxed dynamic.

“She saw us as friends, not students,” said one pupil. “We told each other everything, and it felt like a kind of weird relationship.”

Blackmore explained that the students had provided emotional support during a difficult time when her dog passed away. “If it hadn’t been for those students and the support they showed me after I lost [REDACTED], I don’t think I would have come back to work properly due to the way I was feeling,” she stated.

During an investigation, a parent noted that they had no concerns about any secretive behavior and praised Blackmore as “a really good teacher.” The panel concluded that Blackmore’s actions represented serious misconduct, falling short of professional standards. “The panel was satisfied that Ms Blackmore was guilty of unacceptable professional conduct,” the report stated.

The ban is indefinite, though she may request a review after two years. Follow BBC Somerset on Facebook and X. Send your story ideas to us on email or via WhatsApp on 0800 313 4630.
