BBC sacked Scott Mills after learning alleged victim in police investigation was under 16
Scott Mills Dismissed by BBC After New Evidence Surfaces
The BBC has terminated the contract of presenter Scott Mills after learning that the individual at the center of a police investigation was under the age of 16, according to reports. While it remains uncertain whether management in 2017 was aware of the age of the alleged victim, current leadership became informed recently and proceeded with the decision to end Mills’ employment. BBC News has confirmed that the dismissal occurred last Friday following the release of updated information.
Investigation and Closure
A police inquiry into serious sexual offenses against a teenage boy was closed in 2019, with prosecutors concluding there was not enough evidence to pursue charges. Mills, who is 53, stated in a recent statement:
“Since the investigation related to an allegation dating back nearly 30 years and the police file was closed seven years ago, I hope the public and media will understand my desire to refrain from further public comment on this matter.”
He also expressed gratitude for the support he received, saying:
“I wish to thank all those who reached out with kindness, my former colleagues, and my beloved listeners, whom I greatly miss.”
Recent Developments
On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police disclosed that the investigation involved accusations of sexual misconduct against a boy under 16. Mills clarified in his statement on Wednesday:
“The recent announcement of my dismissal has sparked rumors and speculation. I confirm that the police statement relates to me. An allegation was made in 2016 regarding a historical sexual offense, which was investigated in 2018. A file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which found the evidential threshold for charges was not met.”
He did not elaborate on the specifics of the allegations, nor did he address the BBC’s decision to end his contracts.
BBC’s Official Explanation
A BBC spokesperson emphasized in a statement:
“Scott Mills had a long and successful career with the BBC, and the news of his dismissal has surprised many listeners. We acknowledge the media and online speculation since Monday. Our approach is to balance transparency with the protection of those involved. We obtained new information recently and spoke directly with Mills. As a result, we terminated his contracts on 27 March, aligning with our cultural values.”
The spokesperson noted that the BBC was aware of the ongoing police inquiry in 2017 but clarified that the director general at the time, Tony Hall, was not informed of the allegations.
Mills’ final appearance on Radio 2’s breakfast show was on 24 March, when he concluded with: “Back tomorrow.” Gary Davies took over the next day, stating he was “in for Scott Mills” and has been managing the show since. Davies and overnight presenter OJ Borg will continue coverage for the coming week as discussions about Mills’ replacement gain momentum.
