NYPD officer dies in medical episode while deployed to Kuwait in Iran war
A New York City police officer has died during a mission in Kuwait as part of the conflict against Iran, officials reported. The incident occurred at Camp Buehring, where Major Sorffly Davius passed away, according to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. She highlighted Davius as a “true Citizen Soldier” and a dedicated husband and father.
“Today, and always, we keep his family in our thoughts and prayers,” the NYPD said in a statement. “May we never forget Officer Davius’ sacrifice and may his memory be a blessing.”
Davius, a decorated Army veteran, served with the 42nd Infantry Division in the U.S. Army National Guard and achieved the rank of major, the police department noted. His career with the NYPD began in 2014, stationed at the 79th Precinct. Prior to his overseas deployment, he contributed to Joint Task Force Empire Shield, a National Guard unit safeguarding New York’s prominent locations.
“His life is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by our National Guard members, who balance their roles as citizens, first responders, and soldiers,” Hochul added.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch honored Davius in a statement Saturday, emphasizing that “his career was defined by service — to his country and to New York City.” NBC News has contacted the National Guard and U.S. Central Command for further details.
Seven U.S. service members have been killed in the joint U.S.-Israeli operation against Iran, which has triggered retaliatory strikes across Middle Eastern bases. Six of these casualties occurred in Kuwait, while a seventh died Saturday evening from injuries sustained during a March 1 attack on U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, as stated by U.S. Central Command.
