Shia LaBeouf says ‘gay people are scary to me’ while claiming homophobia led to Mardi Gras arrest

Shia LaBeouf Claims Homophobia Influenced Mardi Gras Arrest

During a recent conversation with YouTuber Andrew Callaghan, Shia LaBeouf, 39, linked his Mardi Gras arrest in New Orleans to his personal apprehension of “big gay people.” The actor, known for roles in “Transformers” and Disney Channel’s “Even Stevens,” described an incident where he felt threatened by the proximity of three gay individuals. “When I’m alone and three gays are touching my leg, I get scared,” he stated. “I’m sorry. If that’s homophobic, then I’m that. Yeah.”

“I’ll be honest with you, big gay people are scary to me,” LaBeouf added.

A spokesperson for the actor has yet to respond to inquiries about his remarks. The arrest occurred amid the festive Mardi Gras atmosphere, with police alleging that LaBeouf struck two people outside a Royal Street business. “LaBeouf reportedly assaulted another individual — punching him in the nose,” authorities noted in their statement. He was subdued until police arrived. The exact trigger of the event remains unclear, though LaBeouf suggested his intoxication and the Mardi Gras environment contributed to the confrontation.

“I’m good with gay — be gay over there, though,” he said. “Don’t be gay in my lap.”

“That’s why. I was drunk and it’s Mardi Gras. So everything I’m saying is nonsense,” he added.

LaBeouf was taken into custody following his hospitalization for “unknown injuries.” He faces two charges of simple battery. This is not the first time he has encountered legal trouble. In 2017, he was arrested for public intoxication, during which he made racially charged comments to officers, as reported by The Associated Press. Later, he apologized, citing his battle with addiction, and the charges were dismissed.

His recent remarks follow a 2020 lawsuit by ex-partner FKA Twigs, who alleged he choked her and transmitted a sexually transmitted disease. The case was resolved out of court earlier this year. Matt Lavietes of NBC News reported the latest developments.
