Wireless Festival boss defends Kanye West appearance
Wireless Festival Director Supports Kanye West’s Performance
The head of Wireless Festival, Melvin Benn, has backed Kanye West’s inclusion as a top act, urging public tolerance for the rapper. This comes amid growing criticism following the announcement of West’s July appearance, which led to several sponsors, including Pepsi, withdrawing support and sparked remarks from political figures.
West faced controversy last year after releasing a track titled “Heil Hitler” and selling swastika-themed T-shirts. He later expressed regret and attributed his remarks to his bipolar disorder. Benn emphasized that West’s past comments on Jews and Hitler remain troubling, yet he believes the rapper deserves a chance to redeem himself.
A Commitment to Forgiveness
“Forgiveness and giving people a second chance are becoming a lost virtue in this ever-increasing divisive world,” Benn stated. He added that his own journey includes 15 years of supporting someone with mental illness, during which he has “witnessed many episodes of despicable behaviour” and learned to offer mercy.
Benn clarified that the festival is not providing West a platform to promote divisive views, but rather to perform songs that are widely enjoyed on radio and streaming services. “I would ask people to reflect on their immediate reactions of disgust and consider offering some forgiveness and hope,” he said.
The UK government is currently assessing whether West should be permitted to enter the country. Benn, who lived on a kibbutz in the 1970s, described himself as a “deeply committed anti-fascist” and stressed his alignment with the values of those who criticized West’s past actions.
