Overnight Bout at Wembley: Fury and Joshua's Potential Showdown

Fury v Joshua could be held - A highly anticipated heavyweight championship clash between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua may find its venue at Wembley Stadium, with organizers considering an overnight scheduling arrangement. According to information gathered by BBC Sport, the proposed all-British contest could take place during the early morning hours to accommodate international television audiences.

Turki Alalshikh, the influential Saudi figure overseeing the negotiations for this potential matchup, expressed his preference for hosting the event in England on Monday. However, he emphasized the importance of balancing local preferences with global viewership requirements. Should the bout—currently being discussed for either October or November of this year—align with peak viewing times across the United States, the main event could commence as late as 04:00 GMT.

Navigating Local Regulations

Individuals closely connected to London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan have indicated to BBC Sport that accommodating an overnight event at the iconic venue is certainly feasible. Nevertheless, Alalshikh and other key parties involved in organizing the fight have not yet established formal communication regarding this possibility.

Wembley Stadium typically observes a curfew deadline of 11pm for events. Once an official request is submitted, the mayor must coordinate with Brent Council—the governing local authority—to determine whether special dispensation can be secured for extending the event timeline.

"Any changes to [the curfew] would have to be assessed by the stadium's safety advisory group of which Brent Council is a partner," the council informed BBC Sport.

Representatives of Alalshikh have been approached by BBC Sport for additional commentary on the situation.

Global Timing Considerations

"I tell you from the beginning, it depends if England give us all that we need," Alalshikh stated on Monday. "We want the fight here in England, but we want the time zone of all the world, especially in America."

"If they allow us to have Wembley late in the night, we want to do it in England. It is about the time and viewership."

"We will talk with the mayors and Prince Abdullah [bin Khaled bin Sultan]."

This is not the first time British combat sports have adjusted their schedules to serve American television markets. Ricky Hatton's encounter with Kostya Tszyu during June 2005 at Manchester Arena commenced approximately at 02:00 to accommodate transatlantic viewers. Similarly, Joe Calzaghe contested two significant bouts under similar circumstances—facing Jeff Lacy in Manchester during March 2006 and battling Mikkel Kessler in Cardiff in November 2007.

More recently, UFC 304 held in Manchester during July 2024 featured a main card that did not begin until 01:00 BST, demonstrating the growing trend of scheduling major sporting events during unconventional hours for global audiences.

Current Status and Upcoming Fights

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn, who represents Anthony Joshua, recently addressed rumors suggesting the bout might relocate to the United States. Hearn clarified that the existing agreement, signed by all participating parties, explicitly requires the contest to occur within the United Kingdom.

Both Fury and Joshua are scheduled to return to competition later this month before potentially facing each other in the coming months. The 37-year-old former WBC heavyweight champion Fury will compete against Poland's Mariusz Wach in Thailand on July 24. Meanwhile, the two-time world heavyweight champion Joshua, aged 36, is set to face Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia on the following day.

The successful negotiation of an overnight Wembley event would represent a significant logistical achievement, combining the prestige of Britain's most famous stadium with the practical demands of international television broadcasting. Stakeholders remain optimistic that all parties can reach a mutually beneficial arrangement that honors both local traditions and global commercial interests.
