Subnautica 2 early access release date set for May after shock legal verdict
Subnautica 2 early access launch scheduled for May following legal decision
Following a series of delays and a legal upheaval, the anticipated sequel to Subnautica is set to debut in early access earlier than previously thought. The announcement comes after a recent court ruling that shifted the trajectory of the development process.
The legacy of Subnautica
Subnautica, the original title, stands out as a standout survival game from recent years. Players navigate an alien oceanic world, facing the challenge of survival while uncovering its secrets. Its success led to a 2021 spin-off titled Subnautica: Below Zero, which was initially planned as downloadable content before evolving into a full sequel.
In 2022, the developers unveiled plans for Subnautica 2, which will introduce co-op gameplay for up to four players. However, the timeline for its release was pushed back after internal changes at the studio. The leadership team, including CEO Ted Gill and senior members Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire, were unexpectedly dismissed by Unknown Worlds’ parent company, Krafton.
Legal disputes and team fallout
The sudden firings triggered a lawsuit from the dismissed employees, who alleged that Krafton had intentionally slowed the project to prevent them from earning a $250 million bonus. The claim centered around the studio’s failure to meet sales and development milestones on time.
Krafton countered by stating that the founders had “checked out,” which contributed to the game’s delayed progress. An internal review of the game’s early playable version in March 2024 highlighted that the team had not fulfilled their initial promises, leading to a restructuring of the development staff.
Court ruling and next steps
Recently, a judge ruled in favor of the former executives, ordering Krafton to reinstate Ted Gill as CEO with full authority over Subnautica 2. The decision cited breaches of the EPA, stating that Krafton had terminated key staff without valid cause and seized control of the studio’s operations.
As a result, the deadline for the $250 million bonus was extended, offering the team a renewed opportunity to achieve their goals. Steve Papoutsis, CEO of Unknown Worlds, shared a statement confirming the early access launch in May 2026:
“Thanks to your dedication and talent, we’ve added more story chapters, built new creatures, and created new biomes along with many other features.”
He added that the development team is now ready to begin an open collaboration phase with fans. “We have full confidence that we have reached a point where we can deliver an experience our players will love,” the message continued.
Despite the ruling, Krafton expressed its disagreement in a response to Eurogamer. “Today’s decision does not resolve the former executives’ claim for damages or an earnout related to Subnautica 2,” the company noted. “Further litigation remains in progress, but our immediate focus remains unchanged: delivering the best possible game to Subnautica’s fans.”
