Baby in Stroller Killed by Stray Bullet During Brooklyn Drive-By, Police Report
A 7-month-old infant was fatally shot by a stray bullet during a Wednesday afternoon drive-by in Brooklyn, according to law enforcement. The incident occurred when a man on a moped targeted a group of pedestrians on a sidewalk, with the child unintentionally becoming the victim, officials stated.
“There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling right now,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a news briefing near the scene. “A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant.”
The attack unfolded around 1:20 p.m. as two individuals rode a moped down a street, firing at least two shots toward a gathering of adults and children at a corner. No other casualties were reported following the shooting.
Shortly after the incident, the moped collided with an oncoming vehicle two blocks away, causing both riders to be thrown off. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that the passenger lost both his shoes in the impact. One of the men sustained injuries and was hospitalized, later placed in custody for a separate case. The second individual fled the scene and remained at large as of Wednesday afternoon.
“This is a terrible day in our city, a tragedy that truly shocks the conscious,” remarked Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain that this family is feeling or the grief that they now carry with them. It is unspeakable.”
The child’s death occurs against the backdrop of a prolonged decline in New York City crime. Through Sunday, the NYPD had documented 52 homicides in 2026, a 29% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. The city is projected to conclude the first quarter with the lowest levels of shootings and killings in decades.
Mayor Mamdani emphasized that the tragedy underscores the ongoing necessity to combat gun violence, despite the city’s recent progress in reducing crime rates.
