Two Met PCs charged over death of pregnant woman
Two Met Officers Charged Following Fatal Crash Involving Pregnant Woman
Two Metropolitan Police officers are now facing legal action after a collision involving an unmarked police car resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child in south-east London. The incident, which occurred on the A20 near the Kidbrooke Park junction on 17 October 2024, has been the subject of an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
PC Chris Johnson is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, while former PC Danny Tomkins faces a separate charge of dangerous driving. The IOPC confirmed its findings in October 2024, with the conclusion linking Tomkins’ actions to the alleged manner of his driving during the incident.
The victim, a 38-year-old woman, lost her life in the crash, with her child succumbing at the scene. She was later pronounced dead in hospital. Both officers are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 28 May. Johnson was operating the vehicle involved in the collision, whereas Tomkins was driving a second car.
“Ours is a deeply sorrowful situation, with the family and loved ones still mourning the loss of the woman and her unborn child,” said Acting Det Ch Supt James Derham. “The IOPC carried out a meticulous and intricate inquiry, collaborating closely with them as the case developed. At this stage, it would be unwise to make statements that might influence the upcoming court process.”
The crash has sparked questions about police conduct, with the IOPC’s investigation highlighting the need for further examination of the circumstances. The court appearance marks the next phase in the legal proceedings against the two officers.
